A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME

Define “Song”

Like Videogum, I can’t really fathom the non-irony of this video demonstration of Microsoft’s new “music” program Songsmith.  Against all reason,it is a thing, it exists in the world, and unlike Skynet,  Cylons,or William Shatner, it is not self-aware.  There are no finger quotes, there are no winks, no signs at all that the corporation was aware this would become a camp classic for the ages.

Clearly Apple (with GarageBand) is the cool kid on campus, and Microsoft is the low geek on the totem pole.  Well, not Beamz, but pretty low nonetheless.  And this is their sad attempt to be “creative” and “with it” like the longhairs.  It reminds me of that time on Freaks and Geeks when Sam tried to be cool by buying a light blue Parisian Night Suit.

Except we all liked Sam and wanted him to succeed and Microsoft sucks and is stupid and who cares if they trip and fall and spill chocolate milk all over the front of their pants.  They had it coming.
